STD Educational VideosSTDs are an unfortunate and common occurrence in teenagers today.  Teenagers are more sexually active than ever and this has caused the rampant acceleration of STDs in the age group.  Many young people don't completely understand the repercussions of their actions.  STD education in our schools and by parents needs to be a priority among teenagers.

There are three types of STDs - parasitic, bacterial and viral.  Bacterial and parasitic STDs can be cured with medicine, however some viral STDs never go away and leave their victims with a lifelong battle.  STDs need to be treated immediately for the treatment to be effective.  The longer the teen waits, the better the chance that the will develop serious health problems.    Cancer and liver damage can result from untreated infections.

The four most common STDs are Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis and Trichomoniasis.

Chlamydia has been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years and it still leads the list among sexually transmitted diseases.  It can be contracted by oral, anal or vaginal intercourse and it can be passed from mother to child.  The symptoms are painful urination, discharge from the penis or vagina, abdomen pain and pelvic inflammatory disease.  Condoms are not 100% on preventing Chlamydia, however they greatly reduce the risk.  Abstinence or monogamous partners are the only way to completely protect yourself from the disease.  Antibiotics are used for treatment, although their is a chance of permanent damage if chlamydia is not treated promptly.

Gonorrhea is another STD that has been around for many, many years.  It also is transmitted by oral, anal and vaginal intercourse and can be passed from mother to child.  Male symptoms include burning or pain with urination, however females many times have no symptoms.  However it can cause discharge and pelvic inflammatory disease among girls.  As with Chlamydia, Gonorrhea can only be completely prevented through abstinence and monogamous relationships.  However, condoms greatly reduce the risk of this disease.  Antibiotics are used for treatment as well.

Syphilis is another common and painful STD.  Like Gonorrhea and Chlamydia, Syphilis is contracted through oral, anal and vaginal intercourse and from mother to child.  However, Syphilis has a more violent effect on the body.  The disease can spread to the brain, heart and other major body systems causing permanent, serious damage.  In children it can cause stillbirth, birth defects and skin rash.  The prevention is the same - condoms greatly reduce risk, however only monogamy and abstinence will completely protect.  Antibiotics are used for treatment.

Trichomoniasis or parasitic disease is contracted through vaginal sex.  Males usually have no systems however females will have discharge, itching and burning during urination.  Pregnant women could have low birth rate babies and earlier delivery.   As with all of these diseases the proper use of condoms greatly reduces the risk of parasitic disease but only monogamy and abstinence are sure things.  Treatment is done with antibiotics.

Although less common, AIDS, HIV and Herpes are extremely serious and should also be discussed.  Condoms will help greatly with all of these serious STDs, but only monogamous relationships and abstinence will keep someone completely safe.

Although STDs are more commonplace among our teenage population, there is hope.  STD education on the prevention of these diseases can slow down the  occurrence and save many teens from permanent health issues.  Encouraging teens to wait until they are in a monogamous relationship or to abstain from sex as well as education on the proper use of a condom are all imperative in slowing down these diseases.
