The planet is not a garbage can, as every Earth-friendly manufacturer knows. This program charts the process of lifecycle assessment for items made of metal, plastic, and wood. The environmental impacts of specific products are followed in detail, including use of natural resources, depletion of raw materials, emissions to the atmosphere and water supply, solid wastes, and ecological consequences. Both conceptual and analytical approaches to lifecycle assessment are presented, and the four main stages of lifecycle assessment are identified: goal definition and scope, inventory of materials, impact assessment, and assessment interpretation. Mold making is the start of many manufacturing projects. This program covers required traits like patience, creativity, an eye for design, and good manual dexterity; job opportunities in industries ranging from automotive, to medical, to communications; and the apprenticeship system. In addition, a journeyman mold maker describes his experiences, from his apprenticeship to ultimately owning his own business. (17 minutes)

The highly specialized trade of pattern making requires creativity, ingenuity, and a great eye for detail. This program explains how pattern makers turn a two-dimensional drawing into a 3-D object for a mold or prototype. The growing demand for pattern makers is also addressed, and two pattern makers-a journeyman and an apprentice-talk about what it's like to work in the trade. (17 minutes)

This program lets students see what the manufacturing skilled trades have to offer, surveying the various occupations available and providing a quick sketch of each job, including general machinist, industrial electrician, industrial mechanic millwright, mold maker, pattern maker, tool and die maker, and industrial welder. But every year, young workers are hurt, disabled, and killed because they don't know their rights and obligations as employees. Filmed at a number of work sites, this video urges viewers to play it safe on the job by learning and following health and safety guidelines. Basic precautions such as hardhats, goggles, and gloves are stressed, along with the vital importance of employee/employer communication. Government labor codes are addressed. The story of a 19-year-old who burned to death on the job adds a critical immediacy to the program. (22 minutes)
