While hay fever-also known as allergic rhinitis-can cause seasonal or even year-round misery, allergy sufferers have reason for optimism. This program presents case studies that show how physicians diagnose allergies and determine the best treatment for them. Highlighting a diagnosis method in which doctors inject chemical triggers into a patient's skin and examine the reactions, the program explains the importance of an accurate diagnosis and how genetic factors come into play. The choice between oral medication and immunotherapy shots is also discussed. In search of an answer, this program travels the globe to examine the complex web of causes of what is amounting to an outright allergy pandemic. Topics include food allergies, pollution-induced asthma, allergies caused by cumulative damage to the skin due to overly aggressive hygiene, allergies to dust mites in the home and off-gassing chemicals found in new construction, and the controversial condition MCS, multiple chemical sensitivity. Also addressed are genetically induced asthma; the LEKTI antibody and its role in Netherton syndrome and the multiple allergies that partially characterize that condition; and imbalances in the antibody IGE, used by the immune system both to fight allergens and to bind to bodily parasites. This program illustrates the causes of sinusitis, assesses various treatments for it, and highlights two sinusitis case studies. Viewers discover how pollution, allergies, and dehydration are all linked to the ailment and how it presents as an infection blocking the sinus passages. Also discussed are the differences between acute, subacute, and chronic sinusitis, as well as the treatment options now available, including saline and steroid sprays, antibiotics, and endoscopic surgery.
